Chaperone information
CHAPERONES: Please remember that ALL DISCIPLINE is handled by school personnel. Should you ever have concerns or witness behavior that needs addressed, please report your concerns to Mr. Beresik, Mr. Lynn, or Mrs. Ferrante.
ALSO PLEASE NOTE: Chaperones are not permitted to bring in or consume any food in the stands while on duty, including drinks, candy, popcorn, chips, etc. Students are not permitted food while in uniform with the exception of the snack we provide at halftime. Please model the appropriate behavior while on duty as a chaperone.
Chaperone duties include, but are not limited to, the following. Certain duties will be assigned to individuals before each event:
1) Assisting with uniform/accessory distribution before the game.
a) For home games, this includes making sure all musicians have their plume unless weather dictates otherwise. In such cases, ensure plumes make it on to the equipment truck!
b) For away games, ensure plumes make it onto the equipment truck and remind band fronts to make sure they have all of their equipment loaded as well.
2) Accompanying the band as they march to the field for home games or riding the buses with the band members for away games. We need at least two chaperones on each bus so will ask all chaperones to spread out accordingly.
a) Chaperones must take attendance on the bus before we pull out and again before we leave the away game to return to the school.
b) Please make a sweep of the bus before disembarking to gather up “forgotten” items and trash is picked up.
3) Once at the field, chaperones sit in the stands with the band and remain with the band for the entire game. At times, you will be asked to take seats between the band and the student section to help maintain order and separation. Unfortunately, this has become a necessity due to issues in previous years.
4) Distributing plumes to musicians at halftime, and collecting them after the performance.
5) Distributing a snack after the halftime performance, as indicated by the band director. Bottles of water are handed out as the band members return to the stands after halftime. Please make sure everyone gets one. If we have the water coolers out, students are NOT permitted to create a parade of activity up and down the stairs for drinks. As always, Mr. Beresik has the final say in what is and is not permitted as far as snacks and drinks. Please adhere to his rules at all times.
6) Accompanying students to the restrooms when permitted by the band director. Mr. Beresik has specific rules with regards to bathroom breaks and the students are aware of the rules. Please defer to him with regards to trips to the restroom. Generally, students are permitted to have a bathroom break near the end of the first and third quarters. Again, Mr. Beresik does not want a parade of students back and forth to the restrooms. They should be in the stands performing and it’s hard to get a stand cheer going with half of the band missing.
STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO LEAVE THE STANDS UNACCOMPANIED AT ANY TIME. The only exception is that Band Council is permitted to meet with the visiting band.
7) Helping with cleanup after the game. The students are generally pretty good about this but do need to be reminded to clean up after themselves at both home and away games. This includes packing up any leftovers and making sure they go back on the equipment truck to be returned to the school.
8) Accompanying the band back to the school and ensuring uniforms are properly hung and put back in the proper spot.
One other duty we have is to pass out over-the-counter meds and other first aid items as needed. The medical/emergency information forms are electronically archived, held by Mr. Beresik and accessible to Band Staff. Prior to giving any medications, the student's form MUST be checked to ensure we have permission to dispense. Please do not assume it is okay to dispense any medication without first checking with Mr. B, Mr. Lynn and Mrs.Ferrante
ALL CHAPERONES MUST BE WILLING AND ABLE TO PERFORM THE DUTIES AS LISTED ABOVE AND MUST HAVE THEIR CLEARANCES ON FILE WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND BE APPROVED BEFORE CHAPERONING. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!
